Text Box: Myth 1: Cellphones give you brain cancer. Fact: There has been exaggerated claims in the media that the use of mobile phones causes brain cancer. The risk comes from the electromagnetic radiation it emits and since a cellphone is held near the head when used, the exposure increases. The Canadian Cancer Society thinks otherwise and they share the general scientific consensus that while there is much to discover about cellphone technology, the amount of electromagnetic radiation is almost nil to pose a health risk as serious as brain cancer. Myth 2: You should always turn your cell phone off in the hospital. Fact: There is truth that some interference is created by cellphones when in close proximity to sensitive hospital equipments. Clinical engineers though confirm that the incidents of this nature are very few to warrant a total ban of mobile phones inside hospital  premises. Cellphones, after all, offer a fast and efficient means of communications  in medical emergencies. But better safe than sorry so hospital administrators have put in place a policy of minimal cellphone use among hospital staff and visitors alike.             Myth 3: Cell phones are the biggest distraction that leads to car accidents. Fact: Officials from motor associations are not quick to agree that cellular phones are the main culprits of road accidents. After all, there are other devices inside a vehicle that constantly battle for the driver's attention like the car stereo and air-conditioning controls. To finger point a particular device is simply incorrect. The problem is not as much as having too many things onboard but the inability to multitask safely and properly. We live in a fast-paced world and it is inevitable to juggle more than one task in a single time. Myth 4: Cell phones have caused gas stations to explode. Fact: It has been sort of an urban myth around the world that using a cellphone when refilling a car at a gas station can cause an explosion. In fact, it is a common sight to see a sign at pumping stations prohibiting the use of mobile phones. But telecommunications authorities as well as people from petroleum companies deny such danger. Besides such incidents were never verified. But to calm the public, phone manufacturers recommend that units be turned off while pumping gas at a station. Myth 5: Cell phones can cause electrocution if used while being recharged. Fact: Recently, a local TV station reported about a victim of cellphone electrocution. The incident has allegedly stemmed from using the cellphone while it is being recharged.
